Our names are AJ, Brad, Eric, and Philip, and together we form the indie rock band "37th Parallel". We all met while attending Georgina P. Blach Middleschool, and started playing music together at the end of the 8th grade.
At the start it was just a group of thirteen year-olds, with a shared appreciation for classic rock, jamming on weekends to their favorite songs. Three and four hour jam sessions became a weekly event and with all the practice the set list of covers began to quickly expand. Gimme Shelter was our first cover followed by a string of Zeppelin covers including D'yer Maker, Good Times Bad Times, Ramble On, Going to California, Houses of the Holy, and No Quarter. Songs from Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, and Santana followed.
We became regular performers in downtown Los Altos at the monthly First Friday events. Fans loved seeing such young musicians performing classic rock songs and doing it well. It was at one of these shows that we caught the attention of a music industry exec. He saw the potential but also counseled that making it in the music industry was really tough and would require lots of hard work and more than a little luck. But neither hard work or luck would get us anywhere if we didn't start writing our own music.
Inspired by the challenge, the band set to work on creating our own original music, trying out new songs at gigs and honing our sound. In the Spring of 2014 we were ready to test our progress and entered the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk Battle of the Bands. We competed with over 50 (mostly adult) bands to win one of the five performance slots and went on to win second place in the competition.
Feeling good about our win in Santa Cruz, we entered the local band contest for Live 105's BFD Music Festival at Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, CA. It was a total long shot as we were competing against over 270 semi-professional bands for only a single slot. The other bands had fancy web pages, music videos, albums, not to mention facial hair! Against all odds we made the 20 band short list and thanks to tremendous support from our fans, won the final fan voting round to become the youngest band to ever perform at BFD.
BFD was a key turning point in the life of the band. Up until this point we were confident as a cover band. Now we were creating our own music and people liked it; they liked it a lot! More gigs followed and it became clear that the next step for the band was to put out an album that would define us as a band and help us make the next step on our musical journey. We're now releasing our debut album, Escape, in August 2015, after successfully funding a Kickstarter campaign and recording, mixing and mastering the record at 25th Street Studios in Oakland, CA.
Where do we go from there? Well, that's up to you, our fans. You are the new kingmakers in the music business, voting with your Likes, YouTube Views, Shares, Comments and Tweets. Without you, young musicians like us don't stand a chance. So if you like what we are doing, let the world know! In the meantime, we will keep rocking , writing, rehearsing, and gigging our hearts out here in California.
